The following is just a little information regarding some of the Items for sale, the clockmakers, and their history. We hope you find it interesting.

Japy Freres: (Japy Brothers); Highly respected and acknowledged, French Clock and Watch Company, founded in 1806 by Frederic Japy and his sons. Most prolific time between 1850 and 1930.

BROCOT ESCAPEMENT: The Brocot escapement, was invented by Achille Brocot (1817-1878) in Paris circa1860. In essence it is a pin pallet escapement, that was designed for use with pendulum clocks. The pins or pallets are often made of jewelled stones or hardened steel. 

DUVERDREY AND BLOQUEL: Paul Duverdrey and Joseph Bloquel founded their company in Saint-Nicolas-d’Aiermont, in France, circa1910. the 'lion' trademark was characteristic of their brand circa.1922 to 1939. After 1939 they used the name and trademark “Bayard” on clocks, but the Duverdrey & Bloquel name remained on clock movements.

ETIENNE MAXANT: The clockmaker, Étienne Maxant, had a business in the rue de Saintonge, Paris between 1880-1905

ORMOLU; (from French 'dorure d’or moulu': “gilding with gold paste”.) Gold-coloured alloy of copper, zinc, and sometimes tin. It can be used in decorating furniture, manufacture of ornaments and of course clocks. Powdered gold was originally mixed with mercury and used to gild metal. A technique that was banned in the 19th C. 

PHILIPP HAAS & SONS (German; Philipp Haas und Sohne).

Founded by Philipp Haas in 1867 in The Black Forest in Germany. Company dissolved in 1920. Karl Haas was a very dynamic manager of the enterprise, and he secured an international market of the 'Haas' clocks, especially the high quality cuckoo clocks. In 1898 his sons took over the Haas business. On the right is the trade mark distinctive 'Hare' of Philipp Haas and Sons. 


 

SHORT AND MASON LTD. 1875 - 1969

were a British Aviation, Meteorological and Surveying instrument manufacturer, based in Hatton Garden in the City of London, England. They made and sold barographs, anerod barometers, compasses and gauges etc. Established in 1875 by Thomas Short and James Mason. 

WILLIAM WILLIAMS.

The maker of the Victorian, English, Single Fusee, Chain Driven, Drop Dial Wall Clock, is William Williams , working 1868/1887  - mentioned in the reference book 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World', Volume 2, written by Brian Loomes.

Dolgelly (also spelt Dolgellau) is a town in the North-West of Wales.
